Usually, the word obsession does not connote anything good. However, today it does. I'm so crazily obsessed with
Lucas the Spider, a Pixar-like animated spider by creator Joshua Slice, that I had to buy myself a branded t-shirt (in the color purple of course!). How Joshua was able to create something so utterly adorable out of the foundation of a spider, I'm not sure - call it genius - or whatever - but all I know is I'm in love with this little fuzzy guy. Lucas has racked up millions of views on his YouTube channel with only 9 short video clips, featuring him in a variety of different scenarios an everyday spider may find himself in (minus the singing and playing the xylophone...but what would an animated spider be without trying to recreate its own version of Itsy Bitsy Spider)? Joshua's 7-year-old nephew is the voice of Lucas and he elevates these everyday spider experiences to the next level - giving spiders an indescribably cute persona that has emotions and feelings - making everyone, even those scared of spiders, fall in love with them.
His catchphrases for Lucas such as "Hieee", "Come Back" and "Heee" will soon enter your everyday vocabulary and they are what compel me to these videos, beyond the fuzzy animation as they give this character a refreshing, peaceful, child-like innocence we all can relate to. Plus, from being a musical spider to being captured and getting away, to playtime in the sink or with the dog or should I say "Polar Bear," Lucas will melt your heart, and you may just find yourself opening your window for the next Lucas you see, inviting him (or her!) to cozy up by the fire and stay warm. And then, you'll find yourself calling every spider in your house Lucas....and yes, the words of Lucas reverberate through your head..."Don't squish me, I want to be your friend all day long." And who doesn't want another friend as cute as this one?😏
